Tableaus

 

Gondola: a railroad car with no top, a flat bottom, and fixed sides that is used chiefly for hauling heavy bulk commodities car. Example with 12" pipe, note slight shift of pipe and very dangerous to ride in.

 

 

Box car: a roofed freight car usually with sliding doors in the sides. Example with both doors open, preferred by train riders.

 

 

Lumber Railcar: a bulkhead flat car loaded with lumber, like the one that caught fire in the book.

 

 

Graffiti: an inscription or drawing made on some public surface (as a rock or wall); also graffito graffiti: a message or slogan written on the railroad and known as vandalism which is illegal. Example graffiti, multi colors not likely hobo origin more likely gang related or artist.

 

 

 

 

Hobo graffiti, note only one color and is usually chalk. Often times uses his hobo name and leaves a short message.
